It is the world's largest government-funded healthcare program aimed at providing health coverage to economically vulnerable families in India.
Key features and objectives of PMJAY include:
- Health Coverage: PMJAY provides health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh (approximately $6,700) per family per year to over 10 crore (100 million) families identified as deprived and vulnerable.
- Cashless Treatment: Beneficiaries of PMJAY can avail cashless treatment for a wide range of medical procedures and hospitalizations at empaneled public and private hospitals across India.
- Coverage of Pre-existing Conditions: The scheme covers pre-existing illnesses from the day of enrollment, providing financial protection against catastrophic health expenditures.
- No Cap on Family Size: There is no cap on the size of the family covered under PMJAY, ensuring that even large families can benefit from the scheme.
- Portability: PMJAY beneficiaries can avail of cashless treatment across all empaneled hospitals in India, regardless of their state of residence.
- Technology-driven: The scheme utilizes technology extensively for beneficiary identification, verification, and seamless cashless transactions through the use of Aadhaar cards and IT systems.
- Empanelment of Hospitals: Hospitals willing to provide services under PMJAY must undergo a strict empanelment process to ensure quality healthcare services.
PMJAY aims to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on vulnerable families, improve access to quality healthcare services, and contribute to the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in India. It represents a significant step towards making healthcare more inclusive and affordable for millions of Indians living below the poverty line.
