The Right to Information (RTI) Act in India emerged from a grassroots movement that began in the rural areas of Rajasthan in the early 1990s. The Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS), a political organization headquartered in Rajasthan, is known for its demand for the RTI Act. In 1994, the MKSS began the first grassroots campaign for the introduction of RTI. In 1996, the National Campaign for People's RTI was formed and formulated the initial draft of the RTI law for the Government.
The RTI Act was passed in 2005, giving millions of Indians the power to ask important questions to the government. The first RTI application was filed in Pune police station on October 12, 2005 by Shahid Raza.
