The Heartland Theory is a geopolitical concept developed by Halford Mackinder, a British geographer and politician, in the early 20th century, particularly articulated in his 1904 paper titled "The Geographical Pivot of History."

Robert Gilpin, a renowned scholar of international relations, defined the integration of the world economy as the deepening and widening of trade, financial flows, investment, and technology. Jan Aart Scholte, a prominent scholar in globalization studies, explores the concept of territoriality in relation to the changes brought about by globalization. His work focuses on the declining significance of traditional territorial boundaries as globalization processes intensify.

Territorialization and Scholte’s Views:

Territorialization refers to the process by which space is organized or controlled by political authorities, typically nation-states, which impose borders, legal systems, and economic frameworks on particular geographical areas. It implies a strong connection between political power and physical territory.
Deterritorialization (a key theme in Scholte’s work) contrasts with this, describing the weakening of the connection between social, economic, and political activities and specific geographical locations. Scholte argues that with the rise of global communications, transnational corporations, and international institutions, the relevance of territorial borders has diminished. Processes of globalization transcend national boundaries, creating networks that are not confined to any single place.
Supraterritoriality is another term Scholte uses, where social interactions and exchanges (such as global financial markets or digital communication) take place in a realm beyond specific territorial locations. This idea represents an important shift in understanding power and governance in the age of globalization, as it challenges the traditional territorial basis of sovereignty.

How Scholte Relates to Territorialization:

Scholte acknowledges that territoriality has not disappeared entirely, but he argues that it no longer holds the central role it once did. Instead, a combination of territorial and non-territorial governance structures increasingly shapes the world. This hybridization results in a world where territory is one of many factors influencing political and economic systems, alongside non-territorial forms of interaction and organization.

In summary, while territorialization refers to the state-centric control of space, Scholte highlights the transformations in how space and power are organized in the contemporary era, with globalization reducing the absolute dominance of territoriality.

David Harvey is a Marxist geographer who developed the concept of time-space compression to describe how contemporary capitalism has accelerated the circulation of capital and social life. This concept is considered one of the most influential in globalization theory.

Harvey's idea of time-space compression is based on the following:

Intensification of events: Events occur more frequently in a given unit of time and space.
Shrinking world: The relative distance between places is reduced, making them seem closer.
