Four Indian Prime Ministers have visited Pakistan since independence.
1. Jawaharlal Nehru
1953 (25–27 July): Visited Karachi to hold bilateral discussions on several regional issues, including the Kashmir dispute, with Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammad Ali Bogra.
1960 (19–23 September): Visited Pakistan to officially sign the historic Indus Waters Treaty alongside Pakistani President Ayub Khan.
2. Rajiv Gandhi
1988 (29–31 December): Visited Islamabad to attend the 4th SAARC Summit and met with the newly elected Pakistani Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto. They signed a major bilateral agreement pact pledging not to attack each other's nuclear installations.
1989 (16–17 July): Undertook a formal two-day bilateral visit to Pakistan, marking the first dedicated standalone state visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Pakistan in nearly 29 years.
3. Atal Bihari Vajpayee
1999 (19–20 February): Made a historic peace journey by travelling to Lahore on the inaugural run of the Delhi-Lahore Bus Service. This pathbreaking diplomatic effort led to the signing of the Lahore Declaration with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
2004 (4–6 January): Visited Islamabad to participate in the 12th SAARC Summit, facilitating crucial sideline talks to restart a comprehensive composite peace dialogue between both countries.
4. Narendra Modi
2015 (25 December): Made a highly publicised, surprise stopover visit to Lahore while returning to India from a trip to Afghanistan. He briefly met with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at his ancestral residence to build personal diplomatic rapport.
