Party System in Comparative Politics

1 / 53

1. Read the paragraph given below and choose the correct answer in the given choice. (KARNATAKA SET 2017 PAPER II)

Parties have become almost universal in the twentieth century and there are different party systems or arrangements. For example, today a majority of countries in the world and nearly two-third of its population are governed by simple parties. In the USA and Britain the two-party system functions and in France and in other West European countries the multi-party system is in vogue. To categorise party systems on the basis of the number of parties is no longer enough. There is need for further sophistication and political scientists have now got away from the simple numerical approach. Professor Almond, in The Politics of the Developing Areas, distinguishes four major categories of party systems with some sub-divisions.

  1. Today, simple political parties are ruling 1/2 of worlds population.
  2. It is not enough to categorise political parties on the basis of the number of parties.
  3. Multi party systems are invogue in France and UK today.
  4. Almond distinguishes four categories of party system with sub divisions.
